April is Autism Awareness Month, and April 2 is World Autism Day.

Nearly one in 88 children has been identified with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). ASDs are a group of developmental disabilities that can result in major social, communication, and behavioral challenges. Onset of symptoms usually occurs between a child’s first and third birthdays.

Early identification and intervention can help a child access services and learn new skills; however, most children are not identified until after they reach age 4 years due to lack of awareness.

The Early Intervention Program- “Samarth” department of Greater Valley School organized a special assembly on April 3, 2014 putting in action the awareness program for the mainstream teachers and children commemorating WORLD AUTISM AWARENESS DAY.

Occupational therapists, special educators and speech therapists of the school, put up a special assembly skit depicting a 4 year old girl with autism and how the people in her environment perceived her and helped her to reach out to the Early Intervention Service Provider(EIP).
The skit was helpful to educate the mainstream teachers and children about autism and what to do when they encounter any child with autism.
