New Delhi (05/07/2023): China’s move to impose export curbs on two crucial rare elements used in semiconductor manufacture, gallium and germanium, will have no impact on India, said Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and IT, ensuring that supply chains will not be abused.

Chandrasekhar explained in an exclusive interview with BusinessToday, “ The India-US Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology (iCET) precisely ensures that there is no such control or abuse of supply chains. [iCET] also covers materials. The world today is working closely with a new India to develop trusted global supply chains.”

He further added, “Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the India-US partnership as well as India’s partnerships with like-minded countries will define the future of technology and global supply chains.”

This is significant given India’s ambition to become a semiconductor and electronics manufacturing nation as well as a global supply chain partner.

President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the iCET in May of last year in order to expand their strategic technological partnership.

The two sides reviewed prospects for increased cooperation during the inaugural meeting of iCET in Washington, DC, in January, and mentioned biotechnology, advanced materials, and rare earth processing technology as areas for future cooperation.

Under iCET, both India and the United States are working on developing an in-house resilient semiconductor supply chain. The countries are strengthening bilateral cooperation on resilient semiconductor supply chains and assisting India in developing a semiconductor design, manufacturing, and fabrication environment.

Both countries intend to promote the development of a skilled workforce that will support global semiconductor supply chains, as well as encourage the development of joint ventures and technology partnerships in India on mature technology nodes and packaging.
