New Delhi, August 23, 2023: In a fiery rally held in Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge responded to BJP’s skepticism about his party’s contributions, highlighting its historical achievements. Kharge asserted that the Congress was instrumental in crafting India’s Constitution, preserving its democratic fabric, and providing the stage for Narendra Modi’s ascension as Prime Minister.
Kharge pointedly questioned the audience, “Who were the freedom fighters?” He elaborated that the Congress’s legacy played a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s destiny, and its actions paved the way for leaders like Modi.
Kharge criticized Modi and Shivraj Singh Chouhan, accusing them of invoking figures like Saint Ravidas only during election times, while failing to uphold their legacies. The Congress leader advocated for a caste census and the establishment of a university in the name of Saint Ravidas, a poet who opposed the caste system.
He addressed concerns about the Constitution’s integrity and called out Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s demand for a “report card” of Congress’s governance. Kharge turned the tables, questioning BJP’s 18-year rule in Madhya Pradesh, highlighting issues such as malnutrition and surging prices.
Kharge proudly enumerated Congress’s accomplishments, including raising the literacy rate from 18.3% before independence to 74% in 2013-14, reducing infant mortality, and enhancing female literacy to 65%. He chided BJP for failing to protect a tribal person who was subjected to humiliation, symbolizing the party’s shortcomings.
Kharge concluded by acknowledging the removal of a “40% commission” government in Karnataka and called for a similar change in Madhya Pradesh’s “50% commission government.” He assured that Congress would remain steadfast despite adversities, aiming to prioritize public welfare.
As the upcoming Madhya Pradesh polls are expected to influence the larger national landscape, Kharge’s spirited defense resonated with supporters, underlining Congress’s historical contributions and commitment to change.
