New Delhi, 15 October: The New Delhi Traders Association (NDTA) has requested Delhi LG VK Saxena to step in and assist in resolving Connaught Place’s failing structure.

NDTA’s President, Atul Bhargava reasoned that the 2010 Commonwealth Games marked the final time Connaught Place was painted.

“We have been requesting permission to renovate the property for the past 12 years, but the NDMC has refused to either grant us permission or carry out the renovations themselves. Everyone wants their stores to seem tidy and clean for Diwali, and we are no different. But there is nothing we can do unless the NDMC gives its consent,” he said.

While the treasurer, Vinay Bahl stated, “Without the approval of the NDMC and HCC (Heritage Conservation Committee), we cannot change a water tap, let alone carry out structural alterations in the building. If there’s a new showroom opening and they want to renovate the space (internal) and do a basic set-up, they’ll need permission from both organisations, which takes about six-eight months.”

Additionally, the General Secretary, NDTA, Vicky Badhwar clarified that the ease of doing business is minimal and newer brands don’t want to open up shop in the area because of peepal trees that are growing here and there, worn-out walls, a host of regulations, long wait times for approvals, and alarmingly high property taxes.

Responding to the issues in the region, NDMC, Vice Chairperson, Satish Upadhyay agreed with the arguments and stated that they will look into the situation and ask relevant civil servants for clarification. “The proper steps will be taken,” he said, adding, “Connaught Place buildings are a part of heritage structures and therefore the Archaeological Survey of India has to be informed before undertaking any maintenance work.”
