New Delhi, 07th June 2023: The authorities at the Indian Meteorological Department confirmed that a deep depression over the southeast Arabian Sea intensified into a cyclonic storm ‘Biparjoy’ on Tuesday.
The name ‘Biparjoy’ was given by the authorities in Bangladesh and is likely to move northwards in the next 12 hours.
This is the first storm brewing in Arabian Sea this year as an exceptionally warm Arabian Sea, a weak monsoon onset and favourable climate conditions helped in the formation of the cyclone.
The sea conditions along the coast of Goa are expected to be rough, as the authorities have also issued a warning for the same. The Met department added that the cyclone will not affect the west coast directly, with the exceptions of some bursts of winds coming from the cyclone gusts and background monsoon winds.
The cyclone as also intensified by 40 knots since its inception on Tuesday morning, and carries the possibility of driving the moisture away from India, affecting the onset and progression of the monsoons.
