New Delhi, 05th July 2023: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) announced that the country’s south peninsular region recorded the warmest and driest June in 122 years at 34.05°C, along with the lowest recorded rainfall at 88.6mm since 1901.
In 1976, it received 90.7mm of rain, the second-lowest amount for June. The region’s long-term average rainfall is 161 mm.
According to IMD, the average maximum temperature in the region in June was 34.05°C, the highest since 1901. The previous record was set in 2014 when the maximum monthly temperature reached 33.74°C. At 30.05°C, the mean temperature is likewise the highest since 1901. The previous high temperature was 29.98°C in 2014.
During June, three sub-divisions experienced significant excess (60% or more) rainfall, seven received excess (20% to 59%) rainfall, seven normal (-19% to 19%) rainfall, 17 deficient (-59% to -20%) rainfall, and two sub-divisions received largely deficient rainfall (-99% to -60%) rainfall.
According to IMD, it was the fifth warmest June since 1901, with mean temperatures soaring to 29.99°C, 0.75°C above average across India.
