Doctors must be truthful to themselves to have a successful profession, says Nagpur’s prominent gastroenterologist Dr Shrikant Mukewar

Noida, October 29, 2022: Although people pay the doctors for their treatment and service, they are still in their debt. It is believed that Diseases can be cured by medicines, but only doctors can treat patients. It stands true because doctors often sacrifice their life, family and even children to save mankind.

In an interview with Ten News Network, a famed gastroenterologist from Nagpur, Dr. Shrikant Mukewar expounded upon his early days as a medical student, the trials and tribulations of pursuing a career in gastroenterology, and eventual success.

He also spoke about the significance of work-life balance in the medical profession. “Doctors are a really talented group, they enjoy a wide variety of activities including flying, music, dancing, and so forth, he said, however, there are times when due to my busy schedule I miss spending time with my grandchildren on holidays,” he shared.

Dr Mukewar who currently practices at the Midas Multispeciality Hospital, Nagpur, talked about how until a couple decades back patients used to harbour ill-founded inhibitions about procedures like endoscopy, colonoscopy and more. But with advancement in medical science, the notion has changed.

 

He was also instrumental in turning Midas into one of the best hospitals across India for complete gastronomical care. He further spoke about the vast nature of this medical field and how expansive knowledge is required to render the best medical care to patients.

“Difficulties may arise due to pre-existing complications that patients may have. In such a scenario, various medical professionals such as technicians, anesthesiologists, and surgeons need to work in cohesion,” he points.

During the interview, he also shed light on the major innovative changes that have occurred in the field of gastroenterology. “For instance, video endoscopy has replaced fiber optic to further amplify medical procedures. Minor procedures require great hand-eye coordination and the introduction of latest technological advancements has helped medical professionals greatly. Other innovations include therapeutic endoscopy, modern-day sonography systems, and third-space endoscopy, among others. As a result of these systems, POEM or the Peroral endoscopic myotomy has become possible, ” Dr Mukewar noted, adding, “The advent of Artificial Intelligence or AI has also significantly helped the medical industry. AI can successfully help medical professionals identify polyps, types of polyps, nature of polyps and so on. Electronic media has also simplified the communication between doctors.”

Addressing the evolution of the medical sector, Dr Mukewar praised the new innovations, and stated that the medical profession has come a long way from the trial-and-error processes that were a reality in the early days. “While virtual care has become the norm in recent days, it also has certain drawbacks. However, he insisted that the first consultation ought to be a physical meeting, and the follow-ups can be undertaken virtually,” he said.

Towards the end, Dr Mukewar gave a powerful message to young doctors or youngsters hoping to pursue a profession in the medical field, he spoke about the importance of hard work, passion, and care toward patients. “Doctors must be truthful and faithful to themselves to enjoy a successful profession,” he concluded.
