On November 10 this year, the fact that another entertainment property made an estimated $750 million on the first day of its release seems to have escaped notice, except in the gaming community. And that community didn’t care about those numbers either. They were busy downloading — in their millions — copies of Fallout 4.

Fallout 4 is an open-world role-playing game. You gain experience points by completing quests or killing enemies. After gaining a certain number of points, you advance a level. Every level allows you to up one set of attributes — strength, perception, endurance, charisma, intelligence, agility and luck, neatly acronymed S.P.E.C.I.A.L. You can use a melee of weapons to defend yourself, from pool cues to the rocket-powered Super Sledgehammer, or you can rely on stealth and sniper rifles, or mix it all up.

Movies grab headlines, but when it comes to sheer numbers, the gaming industry pulled ahead a long time ago. Earlier this month, the latest installment in the Call of Duty game franchise, Black Ops 3, made $550 million on its first day. To put things in perspective, that’s 263% higher than the opening weekend take of this year’s biggest grossing movie so far, Jurassic World. And while Call of Duty may be a name familiar to non-gamers, it pales in comparison to Fallout.

On November 10, PornHub announced a 10% decline in traffic, conjecturing that the sudden drop in interest was due to the release of Fallout 4. According to popular gaming site Steam, at one point, there were 4,50,000 people playing the game concurrently, a record.
