Former Bihar CM Karpoori Thakur to be awarded Bharat Ratna posthumously

India’s highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna, is set to be posthumously awarded to former Chief Minister of Bihar, Karpoori Thakur.

Recognized as a socialist icon, Thakur is celebrated for his dedicated initiatives aimed at uplifting the backward classes in Bihar. During his tenure as Bihar’s Chief Minister from 1977 to 1979, Thakur played a pioneering role in implementing the recommendations of the Mungeri Lal Commission, thereby ensuring reservation benefits for the Other Backward Classes (OBCs). This recognition honors his significant contributions to social justice and inclusivity in the state of Bihar.
