MUMBAI: Days after death of former King Edward Memorial Hospital nurse Aruna Shanbaug in Mumbai, who had been in coma for 42 years, there has been some information released about her attacker. Assailant Sohanlal Bharta Valmiki has been traced to Parpa village in Ghaziabad district of Uttar Pradesh.

According to the reports, accused Sohanlal is working as a labourer there and it is said that he cannot recall what happened on that fateful day. (Also Read: Aruna Shanbaug succumbed to her illness. The man who raped her, Sohanlal Bhartha Valmiki is nowhere in the picture)

The police would seek the legal opinion to decide further action against the man who had assaulted and raped Aruna at King Edward Memorial Hospital in Mumbai on November 27, 1963, said reports.

After being asked if they would consider re-opening the case, Mumbai Joint Commissioner of Police Deven Bharti said, “Prima-facie it seems that this old case may not attract any fresh sections as Aruna died of pneumonia that seems to be the immediate cause of her death.” (Also Read: Mumbai nurse Aruna Shanbaug dies who was in coma for 42 years after brutal rape)

28-year-old Valmiki was jailed and released in 1980 but it’s not clear why he was not convicted for rape or sexual molestation. Now, reacting to the report that the accused is alive, Mumbai Police said that legal opinion would be sought on whether a fresh charge of murder should be filed against him.
