GREATER NOIDA News (11/01/2026): In a significant milestone for public healthcare innovation in India, the Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) has been selected among the top 14 institutions across the country to establish a BIRAC BIONEST Incubation Centre. The announcement was made by the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), functioning under the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India.
The selection follows a stringent three-stage national evaluation process that began last year and assessed more than 100 leading institutions from across the country. Only 14 institutions were finally chosen, placing GIMS in an elite national group of innovation-driven organisations.
With this achievement, GIMS has created history by becoming the first medical college in Uttar Pradesh to be awarded a BIRAC BIONEST Centre. It is also among a very small number of government medical colleges in India to be selected under this highly competitive national programme.
National Recognition for Hospital-Based Innovation
Describing the development as a defining moment for public sector healthcare, Brigadier (Dr.) Rakesh Kumar Gupta, Director of GIMS, said the selection represents national recognition of the institution’s growing innovation ecosystem.
This achievement validates the sustained efforts of our doctors, researchers, and clinicians in building a credible incubation and innovation framework within a government medical college. It marks a historic step towards institutionalising innovation, research, and entrepreneurship in public healthcare in Uttar Pradesh, he said.
Dr. Rakesh Kumar Gupta further noted that the recognition reinforces GIMS’s vision of transforming public hospitals from being solely service-delivery centres into hubs of research, innovation, and technology development.
Leadership Calls It a Transformational Moment
Dr. Rahul Singh, Project Coordinator for BIRAC BIONEST and Chief Executive Officer of the Centre for Medical Innovation (CMI), GIMS, termed the announcement a turning point for the institution.
This is the moment we had been working towards. The BIRAC BIONEST Centre will open access to national-level funding, accelerate the development of healthcare technologies, and strongly support hospital-based startups. Being the first medical college in Uttar Pradesh to receive this recognition is a matter of immense pride, he said.
Dr. Rahul Singh highlighted that GIMS already has a strong foundation in innovation, including a Stanford Biodesign–inspired ecosystem, recognition under the StartInUP initiative of the Uttar Pradesh government, and a state-backed Section 8 company dedicated to driving innovation within the institution. With BIRAC BIONEST funding, GIMS is now positioned among India’s leading hospital-led innovation centres.
BIONEST (Bio-Incubator Nurturing Entrepreneurship for Scaling Technologies) is a flagship initiative of BIRAC aimed at promoting biotechnology entrepreneurship, supporting early-stage innovation, and enabling the translation of research into market-ready solutions.
The BIONEST Centre at GIMS will focus on supporting clinician-led biotech and MedTech startups, facilitating the conversion of hospital-based research into deployable products, and providing access to funding, mentorship, and regulatory guidance. The initiative is designed to address real-world clinical and public health challenges through innovation.
A New Paradigm in Public Healthcare
The establishment of a BIRAC BIONEST Centre at GIMS marks a paradigm shift in Indian healthcare, positioning a government medical college as a structured hub for innovation and entrepreneurship. The initiative will empower doctors and researchers to become innovators, convert bedside challenges into scalable technologies, and strengthen India’s healthcare self-reliance.
A Milestone for Uttar Pradesh
Beyond institutional success, the selection of GIMS represents a landmark moment for Uttar Pradesh, setting a national benchmark for how government medical colleges can play a leading role in India’s healthcare innovation ecosystem. With this recognition, GIMS emerges as a model institution, demonstrating how public healthcare systems can drive innovation, research, and entrepreneurship at a national level.
