GIMS Greater Noida Organises Eye Donation Awareness Drive, Urges Public to Pledge Eyes

Greater Noida News (07 September 2026): The Department of Ophthalmology at the Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS), Greater Noida, organised a major public awareness campaign to mark Eye Donation Fortnight, aiming to educate people about eye donation, address common misconceptions and encourage citizens to pledge their eyes to help tackle corneal blindness.

The awareness programme was conducted in the hospital’s busy OPD registration area, allowing doctors and students to directly engage with patients, attendants and visitors. By taking the campaign to a high-footfall public space, the organisers sought to make information about eye donation more accessible and encourage wider community participation in the cause.

The key attraction of the programme was an engaging Nukkad Natak (street play) presented by students of the GIMS Nursing College. Through a combination of dialogue, emotion and relatable situations, the students highlighted the importance of eye donation and conveyed how the decision to donate eyes can potentially transform the lives of people affected by corneal blindness.

The street play successfully drew the attention of patients and attendants gathered in the OPD area. Its simple yet impactful presentation helped communicate the social and medical significance of eye donation in a manner that was easy for the audience to understand.

Following the performance, Dr. Shailly Raj, Incharge of the Cornea Retrieval Centre, addressed the gathering and provided important information about the eye donation process. She explained how individuals can pledge their eyes, the procedure involved after death and the importance of timely cornea retrieval.

Dr. Raj also highlighted the critical time window for cornea retrieval and explained that the corneas of a single donor can potentially help restore vision in two people, underlining the far-reaching impact of an individual’s decision to donate.

The awareness initiative was organised under the guidance of Dr. (Brig) Rakesh Gupta and Dr. K K Gupta, Head of the Department of Ophthalmology. Their leadership helped bring together medical professionals and students to promote awareness about a social cause closely linked to restoring vision and improving quality of life.

The programme also witnessed active participation from Dr. Nandita Chaturvedi and the department’s team of junior doctors. Their involvement reflected the collective commitment of the ophthalmology department towards strengthening public awareness and encouraging people to consider eye donation.

The campaign focused not only on spreading information but also on addressing hesitation and misconceptions surrounding eye donation. By combining medical guidance with an interactive street performance, the initiative provided the public with an opportunity to understand the process and significance of donation in a simple and engaging manner.

The awareness drive at GIMS Greater Noida underscored the institute’s continued emphasis on community-oriented healthcare and preventive health education. Through such initiatives, the hospital aims to encourage greater public participation in eye donation and contribute towards reducing the burden of corneal blindness.
