New Delhi : Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has issued a notice to Congress president Rahul Gandhi seeking his response on allegations that he had declared himself as a British national while opening a company in the United Kingdom.

A letter dated April 29 was sent after the MHA received a complaint from BJP MP Subramanian Swamy who claimed that Rahul registered a company Backops Ltd in 2003 and he was one of the Directors of the firm. The notice to Rahul comes amid hectic electioneering for the Lok polls.

“It has been further brought out in the complaint that in the company’s annual returns filed on 10 October 2005 and 31 October 2006, your date of birth has been given as 19 June 1970 and that you had declared your nationality as British,” the letter by MHA Director (Citizenship) B C Joshi said.

It said the Dissolution application on 17 February 2009 also showed his nationality as British. “You are requested to intimate the factual position in the matter to this Ministry within a fortnight of the receipt of this communication,” it said.
