I.T.S Dental College, Greater Noida observed “World Cancer Day” on February 7th 2014 to raise awareness about cancer and to encourage its detection, prevention and treatment.

 

World Cancer Day 2014 focused on Target 5 of the World Cancer Declaration: ‘Dispel Damaging Myths and Misconceptions about Cancer,’ under the tagline Debunk the Myths”.

 

World Cancer Day is a chance to raise our collective voices in the name of improving general knowledge about cancer and dismissing misconceptions about the disease. In this regard, a seminar followed by a Nukkad Natak was organized by the College to raise awareness about cancer.

 

Around 400, students, faculty, patients and their attendants also joined hands against the menace of cancer.

 

The session started with a presentation by Dr. Puneet Ahuja (Principal & HOD Oral Pathology) who stressed that tobacco smoking and Gutka Chewing which are the main cause of Oral cancer, must be stopped and deglamourized for reducing the cancer burden on society.

 

He said that College –Community cancer Screening /detection carried out on regular basis, in the rural as well as urban population by the help of Dental camps. The main motive of these camps was to educate and make early diagnosis of the oral cancer. In these outreached programs the people were told about the causes, how to stop the habits like smoking, chewing tobacco and making aware about the sign and symptoms of oral cancer related lesions. The main target of these camps were the young generation, which were more attracted to tobacco  products, thinking as a part of social symbol.

Dr. Puneet Ahuja, stressed about the role of prevention in control of cancer. He emphasized that by avoiding smoking, Gutkha pan, areca nuts, and with increased consumption of fresh fruits, vegetables, increased physical activity and by avoiding and treating certain infections like Hepatitis, Human Papilloma Virus infection, one-third of cancers can be prevented and another one-third can be cured. The presentation on “Oral Cancer” was followed by a scintillating “Nukkad Natak” by students of I.T.S Dental College depicting the myths surrounding Cancer and how to dispel these doubts in the lay person.

 

I.T.S dental college is always a step ahead to create awareness among masses in order to fight their menace for benefit of people.
