Siliguri, 19th June 2023: On Sunday, the Indian Army continued its rescue efforts in north Sikkim for the second day, assisting 300 stranded tourists in crossing landslide-hit areas and going to the capital Gangtok.

Army reports show men from the Trishakti Corps, based in Sukna, assisted in the rescue efforts.

Striking Lion Division, Trishakti Corps troops helped 300 stranded tourists in Chungthang, North Sikkim, cross a temporary bridge and continue their journey to the state capital Gangtok, it added.

The Army gave the trapped tourists food, shelter, and medical care. The Indian Army’s Trishakti Corps aided the Sikkim government in rescuing 3,500 tourists stuck in the North Sikkim district on Saturday, according to a statement.

North Sikkim District Collector (DC) Hem Kumar Chettri said on Sunday that no new permits would be issued to tourists to visit the picturesque district due to weather-related vagaries and restoration work underway for roads severely damaged by landslides, even though all stranded tourists have been rescued.

The District Collector praised the BRO, GREF, ITBP, Army, and district officials for evacuating visitors effectively. “We have decided not to issue new permits to tourists to visit North Sikkim for the time being due to the road restoration work currently underway,” he said.
