25th May, Greater Noida: In a remarkable feat of engineering, a group of bright minds from the Department of Electrical Engineering at Galgotias College of Engineering and Technology has developed a portable low-cost medical ventilator named “Savior.”
This life-saving innovation comes at a crucial time when the world is grappling with a shortage of ventilators due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The team of students, consisting of Shashikant, Harshit Gaur, Aliya Shahin, and Srishti Yadav, dedicated countless hours to designing and building the Savior under the expert guidance of their mentor, Dr. Mohammad Shahid.
Their remarkable creation incorporates various cutting-edge features that make it a vital asset in critical healthcare settings. One of the standout capabilities of Savior is its ability to measure electrocardiogram (ECG) signals, providing real-time monitoring of a patient’s heart activity. This feature enables healthcare professionals to closely monitor the patient’s cardiovascular health while undergoing ventilation.
Additionally, the ventilator includes a temperature measurement function, which allows medical staff to track any fluctuations in the patient’s body temperature, a crucial parameter in managing critical illnesses.
The Savior ventilator stands out with its multiple oxygen level control, enabling healthcare providers to adjust and regulate the oxygen supply according to the patient’s specific requirements. This feature is particularly valuable when dealing with patients who have varying oxygen saturation levels due to respiratory conditions.
Equipped with Internet of Things (IoT) capabilities, Savior takes connectivity and data management to a whole new level. It can transmit ventilator data in real-time to a designated smartphone, allowing healthcare professionals to remotely monitor multiple patients simultaneously. This ground-breaking technology ensures that medical staff can receive vital information promptly, even from a distance, enhancing patient care and streamlining healthcare operations.
The timing of this innovation is especially significant considering the ongoing global shortage of ventilators, which has been a major challenge during the COVID-19 crisis. The shortage has put a severe strain on healthcare systems worldwide, endangering the lives of patients suffering from respiratory distress. With the development of Savior, the team of Galgotias College of Engineering and Technology students has provided a glimmer of hope for medical professionals struggling to meet the rising demand for ventilators.
The low-cost nature of Savior is a game-changer. Traditional medical ventilators are expensive, making it difficult for resource-constrained healthcare facilities to acquire them in sufficient numbers. The students’ focus on affordability ensures that Savior can be manufactured at a fraction of the cost of conventional ventilators, making it accessible to a wider range of healthcare institutions and patients.
Dr. Mohammad Shahid, the project supervisor, expressed his pride in the students’ achievement, saying, “The Savior ventilator demonstrates the power of collaboration, innovation, and determination. These students have shown exceptional dedication and resourcefulness in creating a solution that can make a significant impact on the lives of countless individuals.”
As the world continues to navigate the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Savior ventilator represents a beacon of hope, showcasing the ingenuity and commitment of young minds in addressing critical healthcare needs. The students of Galgotias College of Engineering and Technology have proven that with the right expertise and determination, they can contribute to saving lives and improving healthcare outcomes.
With their ground-breaking invention, Shashikant, Harshit Gaur, Aliya Shahin, and Srishti Yadav, along with their mentor, Dr. Mohammad Shahid, have set a new benchmark for innovation in the field of medical technology.
Students and Supervisors have expressed their gratitude to Dr. Danish Equbal, the Head of the Department, and Dr. Mohammad Asim Quadri, the Director of Galgotias College, for their valuable support and encouragement in promoting research work within the department.
