On Monday, Priyanshu Chauhan was riding home quietly in his school bus, probably planning his summer vacations. Just a day later, he lay in a hospital bed, an arm amputated and scarred for life.

Priyanshu, who studies in Class VIII, was among 31 Vishwa Bharti Public School students returning home in Greater Noida on Monday afternoon when the driver of their school bus lost balance while negotiating a roundabout at high speed, thudded into the road’s median and fell on its side. The others escaped with minor injuries. But a part of Priyanshu’s right hand was crushed and severed.
