Imphal, 03rd July 2023: After Chief Minister Biren Singh inspected the ground condition in the hills abutting Bishnupur-Churachandpur on Sunday, the curfew in the West Imphal district will be relaxed from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday.

Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Biren Singh visited the hills in Bishnupur-Churachandpur to assess the situation.

The District Magistrate’s decision stated, “There is a significant improvement of law and order in the district, and there is a need to relax the restriction of movement to facilitate the general public in purchasing essential items such as medicines and food items.”

“After the period of relaxation expires, persons working in essential services such as health, electricity, PHED, municipal government, press and electronic media, and court operations shall be exempted from further curfew imposition,” the directive added.

This comes nearly two months after ethnic riots occurred in the state on May 3 during a rally organised by the All Tribal Students Union (ATSU) to protest the inclusion of Meiteis on the list of Scheduled Tribes (STs).
