New Delhi, 04th July 2023: Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga Thursday called to stop the current violence in Manipur, saying the situation had “worsened” recently.
The violence in Manipur has killed approximately 120 people and injured over 3,000 more. On May 3, a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ in the hill areas was held to protest the Meitei community’s desire for Scheduled Tribe recognition.
Zoramthanga stated in a lengthy social media post that while the government authorities had hoped things would improve, things appear to have worsened. He further questioned when it would end. “I condole my Manipuri Zo ethnic brethren, my incessant prayers for those who have lost their loved ones, their homes and families wrecked in shatters,” he added.
This comes as the army and other central troops are deployed to restore order in the northeastern state, where unrest between the Meitei and Kuki groups has raged for two months, resulting in the deaths of many people and the relocation of hundreds.
The Mizoram government is anticipating a central government relief package for nearly 12,000 individuals displaced from Manipur due to ethnic conflict. In May, Chief Minister Zoramthanga proposed a 10-crore relief package.
The number of displaced individuals from Manipur in Mizoram has risen to 12,162, with at least 22 new arrivals in the last two days.
