#Medanta…The Medicity or the Hellcity?
These are the thoughts which come to my mind, if someone asks me…should I go to Medanta? Are the doctors good there? Well the only answer is… you can place your trust in God, but not in Medanta. And why do I think so? I lost my mother due to the sheer negligence and the casual approach of the surgery team and the nursing staff of the hospital.
Please don’t think in any way that I am posting this because of sheer frustration and anger. No!! I am posting this, so that the loss and grief our family is going through, others don’t go through and be extremely cautious, if ever you plan to visit Medanta for any treatment.
Here are the facts, which am sure will be enough to enlighten everyone and have a different perspective towards Medanta now ~
— My mother had to undergo a Mitral Valve Replacement Surgery at Medanta, post consultation with the Doctors there. Now valve replacement surgeries nowadays are as common as getting a surgery done for cataract. And this was not an unplanned surgery. We had planned, consulted for 6 months, before getting her operated.
Shocking fact number #1
We got her admitted on 6th Feb 2016 in the hospital. Admission process done, payments made. After two days, we receive a phone call from the finance team that we need to deposit another 4 lac immediately. They tried to create a situation of panic for us… Panicked, we scrambled to arrange for money. However, upon enquiring as to why the additional money is required, we were told that she needs to undergo CBAG process, which means, that not will she is to undergo an open heart surgery, but a ByPass as well. After much confrontation with the team of doctor’s from the Cardiology department and subsequent investigation it turns out that IT WAS A TYPO ERROR FROM THE NURSING STAFF! Because of a B the nursing staff added instead of writing CAG, a procedure for BYPASS was also added worth another 4 lac!!! To a layman, who wouldn’t understand, the person would have ended up getting a ByPass done too for no reason at all.
Shocking fact number #2
Medanta is like a proper corporate set-up. The hospital manages to lure in patients from across India, basis of the brand image it carries. And why not, afterall, Dr.Naresh Trehan is considered one of the most renowned heart surgeons in India. Anyone usually going for a heart related operative procedure is admitted under the name of Dr. Chandra. Fact? We never ever saw or met Dr. Trehan. Whenever, we asked from floor doctors, if he will be there during surgery, if he would be overseeing the operation, we would get to hear a confident lie from the staff that of course he will be there. In fact, we didn’t even see his second-in-command team of surgeons. We always got to meet a different doctor and mostly a junior doctor. And it is usually these junior doctors who are performing the surgery. Bunch of amateurs have a free reign to practice their skills, clear their doubts and gain experience at the cost of life of a loved one. We never got to know, who performed the surgery on my mom.
Shocking fact number #3 and the most important one
Post-surgery, the doctors perform a series of tests to ascertain that the valve and the heart is working properly and the patient can be discharged. After my mom came back home from the hospital after spending 2 weeks, she was recuperating well for 1 month ~ of course the pain, the frustration is always there… you cant move much, you have to sleep straight for atleast 1.5 months.. But my mom took all of these in her stride with the only motive of getting better soon.
But this was not to be. Just after a month, she started complaining of breathlessness and other symptoms, which she had before she was operated. We took her to the hospital, and after a thorough check-up it was revealed that the Mechanical valve which was fitted, was not working. A blood clot had formed, and can be possibly treated using a process known as Thrombolysis. We agreed to it, despite knowing the risks involved. My mom was immediately put on a ventilator and the process was started. The first day we saw some positive results and thought that this may work. However, by the second day her health started failing.
The doctors refused to take her in for surgery, saying that she is in no condition to be operated upon and it is all wait and watch.
By the third day, doctors told us that your patient is critically sick, so we can’t do anything. We will probably give it another shot and see if her condition improves. And this is what was shocking…
When we had gone to see her around 2 pm, her hands and feet were cold and we told the doctors as well.. but they dismissed this by saying that her pulse is dropping so we need to give another try. Later on my father, who is a Doctor himself, told us that her pupils were dilated already and it was just the ventilator which was providing the support.
This means… that the doctors at Medanta are so money crazed, that knowing that nothing can be done to save her, knowing that she is clinically dead, they still went ahead and administered the clot busting drug (Thrombolysis) worth 1LAC into her!!!
This is how low the doctors at Medanta can go to make money, to meet their targets.
Yes, you heard it correctly. For the uninitiated, doctors at Medanta are given targets that they have to convert 60% of their visiting patients into ‘in patients” Do whatever it takes, scare the shit out of the people, who will get scared and do as the doctors at Medanta would say.
I urge all my friends, family and colleagues to please spread this message and share with as many people as you can and I only hope that you don’t have to write something like this!! #PleaseShareAndSaveLife Medanta, The Medicity
Last week, Nandini Sinha who lost her mother posted a long message,
claiming her mother died because of medical negligence by doctors and
officials at Medanta Medicity hospital. The post written by Nadini went
viral with more than thousand shares and likes, that is when it caught
attention of social media and various media houses. Nandini Sinha’s
facebook post is no longer available and probably has been removed by
the user herself. Before reaching to any conclusion it is important to
hear both the sides of the party. Dr. Sabyasachi Bal, a senior doctor at
Fortis who has been practicing medical for over 40 years, himself
reached out to us, after we reported Nadini’s story. He feels it
necessary for everyone to have a balanced opinion. (ALSO READ: Nandini
Sinha lost her mother, falls prey to medical negligence of
‘money-crazed’ Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon) Dr. Sabyasachi Bal in his
mail to us, gives us important insights of these types of medical case.
To set the record straight , Dr. Bal is no way attached to Medanta as he
told us in his mail, and has no association with the said hospital. “I
would like to clarify that I have nothing to do with Medanta, have never
worked there and do not know the doctors involved in this case yet I
feel grieved that such unfortunate accidents are used to tar the image
of institutions and people just because the outcome was not as
expected.” Said Dr. Bal While the doctor who himself has faced the
mudslinging on social media at least three times in his career span of
40 years, shares his condolences with the family of the demised. He says
anecdotal incidents might generate misconceptions amongst those who
read these incidents so he gave us some detailed information to look on
the other side of the story, from a medical professional point of view.
Again to make it clear we still are not aware what exactly went wrong
and no one can repair the loss Nandini and her family has gone through.
But if it is important to cover a report based on a facebook post, it is
also important for us to report what someone has to say about the
concerned issue. Also we are not claiming if Nadini’s story was not what
it read in her facebook post, neither do we support Dr. Bal’s take the
story. It is for the law and official authorities to decide and reveal
the truth. Following are the points made by Dr. Bal in the mail. “6
months were spent in deciding about the surgery by the family is proof
that adequate efforts had been made by the hospital and the family to
establish the diagnosis and decide about the need for surgery.
Presumably, second opinions would also have been sought. Therefore, I am
sure that the surgery was medically indicated.” “In this context, it is
important to talk about theissue about the 4 lacs. Whenever a patient
is admitted for surgery, a slip is for financial clearance is sent by
the nurses to the Finance section. It is entirely possible that the
nurses by mistake wrote CABG (Bypass for Coronary Artery Disease)
instead of CAG.” hospitals which do 25-30 Cardiac Surgeries daily (each
of which takes 3-4 hours) cannot have the Team Leader doing every step
of the operation. But the team leader, in this case Dr Trehan, is always
present during the critical steps of surgery because the primary
responsibility is his. So the question of untrained junior doctors
having a free run is untrue and has no basis. I am sure that the
patient’s family can demand to see the case file and that they would
find Dr Trehan’s name as the Principal Surgeon. Prosthetic valve
thrombosis (PVT) is a rare but serious complication of valve
replacement, most often encountered with mechanical prostheses. It is a
potentially life-threatening complication associated with high morbidity
and mortality.Thrombolysis as first-line therapy in cases of critically
ill patients whose operative risk is high or if surgery cannot be
performed urgently (rescue fibrinolysis) as was done in this patient’s
case. Finally about the unnecessary ventilation to make more money. This
is a sick allegation. Every ICU/CCU does counseling about prognosis
every day and in the light of all these allegations, it is now standard
practice to get the family’s signature on the counseling sheet each day.
I am sure Medanta follows a similar practice. In my 10 years of
practice with my corporate hospital group I have never been troubled
about targets, NOT ONCE!! While concluding his mail, Dr. Bal writes, “I
sincerely feel bad for this family. But I also know that the patient got
state of the art care in a reputed hospital and that grief makes us
imagine things which did not really happen.I also know that every doctor
worth his salt feels bad when patients don’t do well. But like everyone
else we are also humans and subject to the diktats of destiny, fate and
the Lord Above. I hope that the family is able to put their loss behind
and move forward and is able to wash all rancor and bitterness from
their hearts.” We appreciate the time Dr. Bal took to write this letter
to us, and our prayers are with Nandini and her family.
Nothing new had happened dear. This is going on and on. My brother Sunil kr. Agarwal (46yrs) also passed away due to their negligence in June 13th 2013 and the same panicky situation. Went for a planned valve replacement as Dr. Trehan had assured few months back it was nothing serious. And after the admission procedure he had his aorta changed. At that time we couldnt even understand KI KYA HO RAHA HAI and finally he left us. Last but not the least after one year we recoeve a letter FROM THIS HOSPITAL MR.SUNIL KR. AGARWAL COME FOR A CHECK UP….
