National Technology Day: PM Modi unveils projects worth INR 5,800 crores

New Delhi (India), 11th May 2023: Indian PM Narendra Modi inaugurated several projects on Thursday to mark National Technology Day.

The 25th year of Technology Day celebrations began on May 11 and will continue until May 14. The government has laid foundations and dedicated multiple projects related to scientific and technological advancement in the country, worth more than ₹ 5800 crores.

These projects include setting up a Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory-India (LIGO-India), Hingoli; a Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Jatni, Odisha; and Platinum Jubilee Block of Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai.

Joined by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh, PM Modi announced and lauded the efforts undertaken by Indian experts in the field of technology and innovation and also unveiled the theme for this year’s celebration, which is ‘School to Startups- Igniting Young Minds to Innovate’.

These annual Technology Day celebrations were conceptualised by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 1999 to honour Indian scientists, engineers and technologists who worked for India’s scientific and technological advancement after the Pokhran tests conducted in May 1998.
