Nitin Gadkari Inaugurates World Road Meeting 2017 reiterates target of reducing road accident deaths by 50%

Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways, Shipping and Water Resources Nitin Gadkari today inaugurated IRF World Road Meeting 2017 at India Expo Mart, Greater Noida.
Dignitaries and delegates from many countries including Yudhvir Singh Malik, Secretary, MoRTH, Marc Garneau, Transport Minister of Canada, Anne Berner, Minister of Transport and Communication, Finland, Francois Bausch, Minister of Sustainable Development & Infrastructure, Luxembourg, Ismir Jusko, Communication & Transport Minister, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Lehlohonolo Moramotse, Minister of Public Works and Transport, Lesotho, Russian First Deputy Minister of Transport Ditrih Evgeny Ivanovich among others.
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari in his inaugural speech said, “The ministry for road transport and highways is committed to achieve 50% reduction of road deaths by 2020 as a signatory to the UN Decade of Action. It is important, therefore that we identify the gaps that still persist in our efforts and programmes and identify suitable solutions”.
The minister also informed the gathering that there has been a reduction of 4% in accident death rate in the country which of-course need to go down further a lot. He also said that Road Safety Amendment Bill 2016 which has been passed by the Loksabha will be presented in the Rajyasabha in upcoming winter session and when it is passed it will have very positive impact in the reduction of road accidents.
The theme of WRM 2017 is “Safe Roads and Smart Mobility: the Engines of Economic Growth”. Many sessions and seminars are planned to discuss and deliberate on the matter and offer productive suggestions to policy makers in this regard.
