New Delhi, August 8, 2023: As the Lok Sabha engaged in a discussion on the no-confidence motion against the government, Opposition MPs demanded the resignation of Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh due to the recent violence in the state.
The Opposition highlighted multiple issues, including inflation, communal harmony, and institutional independence, where they alleged the government’s failure.
Trinamool MP Saugata Roy accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of undermining federalism in the nation. He cited the case of West Bengal, where he claimed promised funds for schemes like MNREGA and PM Awas Yojna were withheld after election results didn’t align with expectations.
Roy asserted, “This government is of the heartless… You have no compassion, that is why you have not gone to Manipur.” He demanded the dismissal of the Manipur government and the imposition of president’s rule in the state.
NCP MP Supriya Sule echoed the call for Singh’s resignation, emphasizing the shameful events in Manipur. She questioned the support for a government that allowed such incidents and referred to allegations of electoral assistance by certain groups.
Highlighting PM Modi’s foreign tours, Roy questioned his priorities during the turmoil in Manipur, stating, “Is our prime minister a roving ambassador or a traveling salesman?” Gaurav Gogoi of the Congress, who initiated the debate, also questioned the unchanged Manipur chief minister while others in BJP-ruled states had been replaced.
