New Delhi, August 22, 2023: A Mumbai-Ranchi IndiGo flight took a distressing turn as a passenger, suffering from chronic kidney disease and tuberculosis, vomited blood on board.

The dire situation prompted the flight to initiate an emergency landing in Nagpur, according to officials. Tragically, the 62-year-old passenger’s health rapidly deteriorated, and he passed away before he could be transported to a hospital.

IndiGo flight 6E 5093, en route from Mumbai to Ranchi, diverted its route to Nagpur due to the grave medical emergency unfolding on board. The airline issued a statement, confirming the events, “The passenger was offloaded and was rushed to the hospital for further medical assistance. Unfortunately, the passenger did not survive.”

KIMS Hospital, where the passenger was taken, confirmed his unfortunate fate, stating, “He was brought dead to the KIMS hospital. His body was taken to Government Medical College and Hospital for further procedures,” as conveyed by Aejaz Shami, DGM of Branding and Communications at KIMS Hospital in Nagpur.

This incident follows a series of distressing events involving medical emergencies during flights. Just last week, a Qatar Airways pilot suffered a fatal heart attack on a Delhi-Doha flight while travelling as a passenger. Subsequently, an IndiGo captain fell unconscious at a Nagpur boarding gate, and despite efforts, he was pronounced dead at a hospital. He had been scheduled to operate a flight from Nagpur to Pune on that day.

As these unfortunate incidents underscore the unpredictable challenges that can arise during air travel, airlines continue to prioritize passengers’ safety and well-being. The aviation industry grapples with the complexities of managing medical emergencies at high altitudes, highlighting the need for preparedness and swift response measures to ensure the best possible outcomes for all those on board.
