New Delhi (India), March 21, 2023: A police crackdown in Delhi has resulted in the arrest of four individuals and the filing of 44 cases in response to thousands of posters targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi that were put up in various parts of the city.
The posters, most of which had the slogan “Modi hatao, desh bachao (remove Modi, save the country),” were found in multiple locations throughout Delhi. Police claimed that the arrests were made due to the defacing of public property and the lack of printing press identification on the posters, which is required by law.
On Tuesday, the police removed almost 2,000 posters from different parts of Delhi and seized approximately 2,000 more that were being transported to the Aam Aadmi Party’s office. The arrested printing press owners claimed to have received an order to print 50,000 anti-Modi posters.
The incident has further fueled the ongoing tension between the ruling government and the opposition Aam Aadmi Party. The latter questioned the legality of the FIRs and the objectionable nature of the posters in a tweet, describing the situation as “the peak of the Modi government’s dictatorship.”
Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party accused the AAP of flouting the law while putting up the posters and claimed that they lacked the courage to admit their involvement. In response, the Aam Aadmi Party has announced a protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Modi.
