Delhi, Sept 29th, 2022: Centre on Wednesday appointed senior advocate R Venkataramani as the new Attorney General of India for a period of three years.
Venkataramani, appointed by President Droupadi Murmu will be the 15th Attorney General, succeeding K. Venugopal.
The announcement of his appointment was released by the Law Ministry.
With over forty years of practice at the Supreme Court, Venkataramani has specialized in Constitutional law, law of indirect taxes, human rights law, civil and criminal law, women and child rights.
He was designated as a Senior Advocate by the Supreme Court in the year 1997. He has previously served as a Member of the Law Commission of India for two terms in 2010 and 2013.
He has also represented Central Government, several State Governments, Universities, and Public Sector Undertakings in their major litigations in the top court and High Courts and continues to represent the Supreme Court in matters concerning its employees.
Venkataramani’s appointment comes just a few days after senior lawyer Mukul Rohatgi declined the Central government’s offer to return for a second stint. Rohatgi has previously served as the Attorney General in 2014 after which Venugopal had taken over.
After serving for over two years, Venugopal had requested the Law Ministry not to extend his tenure because of his advanced age.
