Five-time BJP MLA from Jamshedpur East, Raghubar Das, will take charge as Jharkhand’s first non-tribal chief minister in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi here on Sunday. It will also be the first time that a pre-poll alliance will assume government office in the state.

However, the BJP’s decision to name a non-tribal CM has also triggered debate whether it would be in the interest of Jharkhand’s adivasis. Political parties have traditionally made tribal CMs because Jharkhand has 26% tribal population and because the state was carved out of Bihar deferring to the region’s tribal identity.
