New Delhi (India), April 22, 2023: Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi is set to vacate his official bungalow at 12, Tughlaq Lane in New Delhi on Saturday, following his disqualification as an MP after being convicted in a defamation case.
According to PTI sources, Gandhi has already moved his belongings from the bungalow to his mother Sonia Gandhi’s residence at 10 Janpath. He is expected to hand over the bungalow to the Lok Sabha Secretariat on Saturday.
The Congress leader was asked to vacate the government bungalow by April 22 following his conviction in the “Modi surname” remark case. On April 14, he had already shifted his office and some personal belongings to his mother’s residence.
Sources indicate that Rahul Gandhi had been residing at the bungalow for almost two decades. After shifting his office, he began living with his mother and Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi at her official residence.
After a Surat court convicted Gandhi in a criminal defamation case on March 23 and sentenced him to two years, he was disqualified as an MP. The Lok Sabha Secretariat subsequently sent him a notice to vacate the premises by April 22.
On Thursday, Congress announced that it will continue to explore all available legal options after a Gujarat court rejected Rahul Gandhi’s application for a stay on his conviction in the same case. Congress leader Dr. Abhishek Manu Singhvi said the party will approach a higher court at the earliest.
