Relentless Rainfall Ravages North India: Train Services Disrupted, Infrastructure Damaged

New Delhi, July 13, 2023: Northwest India has been grappling with relentless rainfall, resulting in severe disruptions to train services and essential infrastructure. Over the past three days, regions in Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan experienced heavy to extremely heavy rains, leading to overflowing rivers, creeks, and drains.

According to officials, more than 300 mail and express trains and 406 passenger trains have been cancelled between July 7 and July 15 due to waterlogging on tracks caused by the heavy downpours. In total, approximately 600 mail/express trains and over 500 passenger trains have been impacted by the waterlogging.

Northern Railways, responsible for the affected region, has taken measures to mitigate the impact. Around 300 mail/express trains have been cancelled, 100 trains have been short-terminated, and 191 trains have been diverted. Additionally, 67 trains have been short-originated to manage the situation.

The heavy waterlogging has also resulted in the cancellation of 406 passenger trains, along with the diversion of 28 trains. Furthermore, 56 trains have been short-originated and 54 trains have been short-terminated due to the challenging conditions caused by the incessant rainfall.

The torrential rains have wreaked havoc on the region, causing significant damage to infrastructure and severely disrupting essential services. Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Punjab have been particularly affected, with overflowing rivers and drains exacerbating the situation.

Authorities and railway officials are working diligently to restore normalcy and ensure the safety of passengers. Efforts are underway to manage the waterlogged tracks and address the aftermath of the heavy rainfall.
