Delhi (India), February 15, 2023: Mohan Bhagwat, the Chief of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), has opposed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led central government’s plan for “one nation, one election” and said that “good countries of the world have all kinds of thoughts.”

The statement was made by Bhagwat at an award function on Tuesday organized by the Rajrantna Puraskar Samiti.

He said, “One person, one thought, one group, one ideology cannot make or break a country… The good countries of the world have all kinds of thoughts. They also have all kinds of systems, and they are growing with this multitude of systems.”

His statement comes in the wake of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pitch for “one nation, one election,” which he believes would save time and money.

The Law Commission has sought views of various stakeholders on holding simultaneous elections, appointment of Prime Minister, chief ministers as the Lok Sabha Speaker is selected.

The move has been criticised by opposition parties who have pointed out that the BJP “only knows only one word that is one”. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has said that “the plan will only fulfill the BJP’s dreams of running its Operation Lotus drive.”
