SC questions Centre, RBI over going back on their promise of accepting old Rs 500, Rs 1000 notes till March 31

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday issued a notice to the Centre and the Reserve Bank Of India (RBI), asking why they went back on their promise to extend the final date (March 31) to deposit old Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency note. As per the reports, the SC has fixed the petitions on demonetisation for further hearing on March 10.

As per the reports, people who visited RBI office to exchange old 500 and 1000 notes were left shocked when they were informed that the facility is only for NRIs or who were not in the country during the 50-day demonetisation period.

The RBI on November 8 statement said, “Any person who is unable to exchange or deposit the specified banknotes in their bank accounts on or before December 30, 2016 shall be given an opportunity to do so at specified offices of the Reserve Bank or such other facility until a later date as may be specified by the Reserve Bank.”

Few days back, it was reported that the government is planning to relaunch Rs 1000 note in a totally new avatar, claim reports. An RBI official had informed leading daily Indian Express that the printing of the new Rs 1000 notes has already been started and it can be circulated in the market in a couple of months. “The initial plan was to introduce the new Rs 1,000 note in January but it has been delayed due to the pressing need to supply Rs 500 notes,” the official informed the daily.
