Sensex Falls 417 Points, Nifty Slips Below 23,700 as Crude Oil Nears $100: Key Market Triggers

TEN NEWS NETWORK

National News (08 September 2026): Indian benchmark equity indices remained under pressure on Tuesday as rising crude oil prices, weak global market signals and concerns over inflation weighed on investor sentiment. The Sensex fell 417.23 points, or 0.55%, to close at 75,715.58, while the Nifty 50 declined 108.30 points, or 0.46%, to 23,670.85.

The market’s decline came despite relative strength in broader equities, with the Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 indices holding in positive territory. The divergence suggested that selling pressure was more pronounced in large-cap stocks, while selective buying continued across mid- and small-cap counters.

IT, Oil & Gas and Auto Stocks Under Pressure

Sectoral performance remained mixed during Tuesday’s session. Nifty IT, Nifty Oil & Gas, Nifty Private Bank and Nifty Auto indices were among the major laggards, exerting pressure on the headline benchmarks.

On the other hand, some defensive and commodity-linked segments managed to buck the broader trend. Nifty Pharma, Nifty Metals, Nifty Media and Nifty FMCG traded higher, providing some support to the broader market.

The sectoral divergence indicates that investors are becoming increasingly selective amid uncertainty over global growth, commodity prices and the near-term direction of equities.

Crude Oil Emerges as a Major Market Concern

A key factor behind the cautious mood was the continued rise in international crude oil prices. Brent crude was trading around $98.6 per barrel, after touching a six-week high in the previous session.

The surge in oil prices has renewed concerns for oil-importing economies such as India. Higher crude prices can increase the country’s import expenditure, create additional inflationary pressure and put stress on the current account.

Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, described persistently elevated oil prices as a significant risk for the Indian economy and financial markets.

Market strategist Siddhartha Khemka, Head of Research, Wealth Management at Motilal Oswal Financial Services, also indicated that Indian equities could remain vulnerable if international cues stay weak and crude prices continue to climb.

Strait of Hormuz Developments Keep Investors Alert

Geopolitical developments in the Middle East have added another layer of uncertainty for global energy markets.

Iran indicated that an agreement with Oman to oversee shipping through the Strait of Hormuz was nearing completion, while simultaneously warning of risks to vessels operating near Oman’s coast.

The developments followed US strikes on Iranian vessels over the weekend, increasing investor concerns over the security of one of the world’s most strategically important oil-shipping routes.

Any disruption to crude movement through the Strait of Hormuz could potentially put additional upward pressure on international oil prices, making the issue particularly important for major oil-importing economies.

Asian Markets Mostly End Lower

Weakness across several Asian markets also contributed to the cautious sentiment in Indian equities.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 registered the steepest decline among major regional markets, falling around 1.7%. New Zealand’s NZX 50 declined 1.08%, Australia’s ASX 200 slipped 1%, and South Korea’s Kospi fell 0.58%.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng declined 0.38%, Taiwan’s Taiex dropped 0.47%, Singapore’s STI lost 0.47%, while China’s Shenzhen index declined 0.52%.

In contrast, China’s Shanghai Composite and Thailand’s SETI gained around 0.2% each.

US Futures Mixed Ahead of Wall Street Resumption

US equity futures showed a mixed trend on Tuesday after Wall Street remained closed on Monday for the Labor Day holiday.

Dow Jones futures were down about 0.6%, while S&P 500 futures declined around 0.2%. Nasdaq-100 futures, however, were marginally higher at around 0.1%.

Investors are likely to watch the reopening of US markets closely for fresh signals on global risk appetite and the direction of foreign fund flows into emerging markets.

Nifty 50 Technical Outlook

From a technical perspective, the 23,700 level remains an important near-term zone for the Nifty 50 following Tuesday’s decline.

According to Ponmudi R, the index has immediate support in the 23,750–23,700 range, while 23,600 is a crucial level to watch on the downside.

On the upside, a sustained move above 24,000 could help improve market momentum and provide a positive signal to traders.

For now, however, the combination of elevated crude prices, geopolitical uncertainty and weak international cues is likely to keep volatility elevated.

What Investors Should Watch Next

Market participants will closely monitor crude oil movements, developments around the Strait of Hormuz, global equity trends and upcoming domestic economic indicators for further direction.

The contrasting performance between large-cap benchmarks and broader market indices also suggests that investors are not exiting equities uniformly but are instead rotating towards selected sectors and stocks. With the Nifty hovering below the 23,700 mark, traders are likely to keep a close watch on the 23,600–24,000 range, which could become an important zone for determining the market’s next directional move.
