NEW DELHI:  The temperature in Delhi hovered around 44 degrees today as a severe heat wave seared north India.

The met department has put out a “very severe heat wave” warning for parts of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi.

Over 300 have reportedly died in Delhi this season, more than 100 just in May.

“The sky will remain clear. Dust storm and haze are likely to occur towards the evening and morning,” an official of the India Meteorological Department said.

The humidity at 8.30 am was 34 per cent and visibility remained at 3,000 metres, the official said.

At 4.30 pm, the temperature was close to 45 in parts of the capital.

According to weather analysts, the temperature will keep rising in Delhi for at least three more days due to dry winds from north-western direction.

“We are not expecting rain for at least three to four days. Last year, the monsoon reached Delhi by June 28, which mean it would only arrive by the end of June,” private weather forecaster Skymet’s director Mahesh Palawat was quoted as telling IANS.

In Rajasthan, the temperature is expected to cross 47 degrees on the weekend.
