Starbucks to Set Up Global Capability Centre in Chennai, Plans 800 Jobs in First Phase

National News (22/09/2026): Starbucks is expanding its corporate and technology footprint in India with plans to establish a Global Capability Centre (GCC) in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The US-based coffee major has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu government for the proposed centre, marking another addition to Chennai’s growing GCC ecosystem.

The centre is expected to generate around 800 high-value employment opportunities during its initial phase, potentially creating new openings across technology, business operations, analytics and other specialised functions.

Starbucks chooses Chennai for global operations

The agreement follows discussions between Starbucks’ global representatives and Tamil Nadu Industries and Investment Minister S. Keerthana. The state government has positioned the proposed facility as part of its broader effort to attract multinational companies and encourage them to establish long-term, high-skilled operations in Tamil Nadu.

Welcoming the development, the minister said Starbucks’ decision to select Chennai for its GCC reflects the city’s talent pool and the state’s developing business ecosystem.

In a social media post, Keerthana described the partnership as a strong collaboration between Tamil Nadu and Starbucks and highlighted the state’s focus on attracting global companies to build advanced capabilities locally.

GCC expansion becomes a key investment focus

The Starbucks agreement comes as Chennai continues to strengthen its presence in the Global Capability Centre segment. GCCs are increasingly being used by multinational companies not only for routine support operations but also for technology development, research, analytics, finance, engineering and other specialised functions.

The Tamil Nadu government has been working to create an environment that can support such high-value operations over the long term. Recent GCC-related developments involving companies such as Nordex, Chubb, Walgreens, EY and Sigma Technology have added further momentum to Chennai’s corporate services and technology ecosystem.

Three dedicated GCC corridors planned in Chennai

Tamil Nadu has also announced plans for three dedicated GCC corridors in Chennai. The initiative includes provisions for higher Floor Space Index (FSI), aimed at facilitating the development and expansion of large-scale global capability operations.

The move is intended to provide companies with greater flexibility to establish larger campuses and scale their operations as their workforce and business requirements grow.

Focus on skilled employment for young workforce

The state government has highlighted employment generation as one of the expected outcomes of the Starbucks investment. The proposed 800 positions in the first phase could add to demand for professionals with specialised skills in areas associated with global corporate operations.

The Chief Minister has also expressed optimism that the Starbucks project will create new employment opportunities for young people while strengthening Chennai’s position as a destination for international companies.

For Starbucks, the Chennai centre represents an expansion beyond its customer-facing retail operations and adds another dimension to its presence in India. For Tamil Nadu, the project forms part of a broader strategy to attract multinational companies, expand high-value employment and establish Chennai as a base for global business functions.
