New Delhi: New norms laid down by the University Grants Commission (UGC) requiring PhD and MPhil candidates to score at least 50% in the entrance test to be eligible for admission is not going well with the students.

The Students alleged that it is an attack on higher education and Delhi University has arbitrarily and post-facto enacted archaic rules which has led to a reduction of students admitted in the Mphil/PhD programmes.

Leading to this, in Solidarity with Delhi University students, Students from different Universities and colleges have been up in arms against the new norms and are on dharna (sit-in protest) on various places.

On Wednesday, Students staged ‘Hunger Strike’ Protest Against what they say as’ Unconstitutional MPHIL/PHD Admission Process’ outside Art Faculty in University of Delhi.

Speaking To Ten News protesting students said,

“we are protesting here as due to this notification, the cut-off was unjustifiably increased and minimum requirement of 50% marks to qualify for the cut-off is very difficult to achieve due to
the recently introduced scheme of negative marking in the paper.”

Talking about the Students Qualifying list they said, “Revised Interview List was released on July 23, 2018 which
had minimal students qualifying through the entrance test with the heavy majority qualifying through
UGC NET/JRF with several out of those called through the entrance also having cleared the NET.”

“This year, only few students have scored more than 50% in the entrance examination and of these, most of the students are from the general category, and while the remaining candidates belongs to the OBC category. Most importantly we did not knew about these rules. Does this mean that students who come from deprived backgrounds like us should not study?.” added Protesting Students.
