Symposium on ‘Challenges to Indian Electoral Democracy’ on International Day Of Democracy!

New Delhi: September 15th is International Day of Democracy, a day held to raise public awareness about a universal value based on the freely expressed will of the people. On Saturday, A Panel Discussion, Symposium on “Challenges to Indian Electoral Democracy ” was organised at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi to mark the International Day of Democracy.

Chief Election Commissioner, Om Prakash Rawat was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Election Commissioner Ashok Lavasa was the Guest of Honour. The theme of the program was “Democracy under Strain: Solutions for a Changing World”

Speaking on the occasion,
Chief Election Commissioner, Om Prakash Rawat said,

“Democracy is showing greater strain today and we need to work together to ensure it remains relevant in political, economic, social and cultural systems. India is the largest democracy in the world. In the last more than 6 decades it has worked successfully well to some extent. But in modern India it has to face many challenges that need to be tackled in order to ensure true democracy. These challenges may include, social and economic inequalities, poverty and unemployment, Illiteracy and ignorance, casteism, communalism, population explosion, regionalism, corruption and terrorism, etc.”

Election Commissioner Ashok Lavasa, said, “Democracy means Equality that doesn’t mean it will be a straight line there will be disperity. We do thought of Equality that’s where issue of governance become valid.Election Enhance the Legitimacy of the Government. if its contaminated by any force legitimacy of leaders will suffer. What steps are needed and what priority to move from here and its Time to rethink about Democracy beyond elections . It’s not an autopilot ride but requires sustained attention even after elections & votes.”
