Chennai (Tamil Nadu), 9th March 2023: Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi returned to the state government on Wednesday the bill passed by the Assembly on October 19, 2022, to prohibit online gambling and regulate online games.

After four months, the Governor returned the bill and requested additional clarification from the state government.

On October 19, 2022, Tamil Nadu Law Minister S Regupathy introduced a bill in the state assembly to prohibit online gambling games. The Bill was introduced in order to prohibit online gambling platforms such as Rummy and Poker.

The Tamil Nadu government stated in March that they were committed to banning these online platforms and that they were working to invoke the laws that would accomplish this goal.

On October 7, Governor Ravi issued an ordinance prohibiting and regulating online gambling in the state.

Based on a report submitted by Justice Chandru’s led panel and input from stakeholders, the government decided to ban online rummy games.

Earlier this month, the Tamil Nadu Cabinet approved an ordinance prohibiting online gambling.

Following the acceptance of the bill to outlaw online gambling by the Council of Ministers, the Governor gave his support, and the measure received Governor Ravi’s assent in October.

The Tamil Nadu state government has made two attempts to pass legislation outlawing online gambling in the region, and according to that legislation, no supplier of online games can offer online gambling services, permit the gaming of any online gambling that requires the use of cash or other risks, or permit the gaming of any online game that violates the rules.
