New Delhi, July 30, 2023: With just two days remaining before the deadline for Income Tax Return (ITR) filing, taxpayers across the country are in a frenzy to complete the return filing process. The deadline for filing ITR for the year 2023 is July 31, and it seems highly unlikely that there will be any extension this year, adding to the urgency among taxpayers.

Amidst this last-minute rush, some taxpayers have reported encountering errors on the e-filing portal, causing them further anxiety.

Taking to Twitter, one such taxpayer expressed frustration, claiming that the e-filing portal has been malfunctioning for the past five days. The taxpayer urged the Income Tax Department to extend the ITR due date by 30 days, citing the issues faced by taxpayers on the e-filing portal.

Responding to the plea, the Income Tax Department reassured taxpayers that the e-filing portal was functioning smoothly and requested those facing problems to reach out to them.

“The e-filing portal is working fine. May we request you to write to us at orm@cpc.incometax.gov.in detailing the specific issue you’ve encountered (along with PAN, your mobile no. & a screenshot of the error). Our team will get in touch with you,” the Income Tax Department stated.

As the deadline approaches, a significant number of taxpayers have already filed their returns without any hiccups. According to data on the e-filing portal, over 5.73 crore ITRs were filed until July 29. Of these, more than 4.9 crore returns have been verified by taxpayers, and the Income Tax Department has processed over 3.18 crore ITRs.

It is essential for taxpayers, whose accounts don’t require auditing, to file their returns by the stipulated date of July 31 to avoid facing consequences. Failing to file ITR before the due date may result in penalties under Section 234F of the Income Tax Act, with fines ranging up to Rs 5000. For taxpayers with an income less than Rs 5 lakh, the late filing fine is Rs 1000. Besides monetary penalties, there are other potential ramifications of missing the July 31 deadline.

As the clock ticks down, taxpayers are encouraged to act promptly to fulfill their ITR filing obligations and avoid any undue complications. The Income Tax Department remains committed to assisting taxpayers through the process and ensuring a seamless filing experience.
