Noida – October 10, 2023: On the occasion of World Mental Health Day, Ten News Network took the initiative to address pressing issues faced by Indian youth by hosting an insightful discussion titled “Man Ki Baat Shweta Ke Sath.” The session delved into the challenges encountered by Indian youth and the necessity of early intervention. It took place on Tuesday, October 10th, 2023, at 9:00 a.m.

Distinguished speakers graced the event, including Professor (Dr.) Anil Vartak, the founder of the Eklavya Foundation for Mental Health in Pune, Ganesh N. Ranjan, an accomplished author and someone with lived experience, and Dr. Pallavi Prakash, a renowned clinical psychologist, TV panelist, author, filmmaker, and inspirational speaker. The session was expertly moderated by Shweta Kumari, a prominent anchor and advisor within the Ten News team.

Professor Anil Vartak emphasized the unique advantage that India’s vast population offers for economic growth while also acknowledging the alarming prevalence of mental illness. With mental illness affecting 10-15% of the Indian population, the youth, especially those aged 17 to 25, are particularly vulnerable due to the myriad challenges they face, including physical, intellectual, emotional, and sexual development, as well as academic and career pressures. Professor Vartak underscored the critical importance of early intervention to mitigate these challenges and stressed the need for heightened awareness.

Dr. Pallavi Prakash highlighted the contemporary issue of “digital mental illness” resulting from excessive social media use. She urged individuals to detox from screen time, engage in offline activities, and establish structured timetables. Dr. Prakash also emphasized the significance of authentic, real-life interactions to foster mental well-being, and she encouraged individuals to boost their self-esteem and assertive skills to manage peer pressure effectively.

Ganesh N. Ranjan shared insights into depression, explaining that it predominantly affects individuals over the age of 20. He linked adolescence stress to a lack of sex education and knowledge about safe touch. Ranjan’s three mantras for mental health involved differentiating fate from destiny, avoiding comparisons with others, and embracing personal growth. He also emphasized the power of prayer as a means of transformation.

The session concluded with a Q&A session, wherein the speakers provided valuable answers and insights, reinforcing the importance of early identification and intervention for mental health issues. The audience lauded the suggestions presented, emphasizing the need for a multi-faceted approach to address these concerns and instilling a deeper understanding among the youth.
