New Delhi, July 27, 2023: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Sikar, Rajasthan, was marred by a public spat between him and Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot. The Chief Minister accused the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) of cancelling his pre-scheduled 3-minute speech at a farmers’ event via videoconference.

In response, PM Modi addressed the issue during the event, citing Gehlot’s ill health as the reason for his absence and wished him a speedy recovery.

The Twitter war between the two leaders ensued earlier in the day, with CM Gehlot claiming that his speech was removed from the program without notice. However, the PMO refuted this claim, stating that the Chief Minister had opted out due to a leg injury and was welcome to join the event.

Gehlot shared letters as evidence of his planned remote participation, but the plans were allegedly changed at the last minute. He clarified that, despite the setback, he would participate via video conferencing in the interest of Rajasthan.

This marked PM Modi’s sixth visit to Congress-ruled Rajasthan, where the BJP is seeking to gain ground in Sikar, a district dominated by the Jat community. The BJP currently holds no MLAs out of eight seats in the area, while the Congress and one independent member have the majority. The Jat community, known for its political influence, holds the potential to be a gamechanger in the upcoming state elections.

The rift between the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister has drawn attention, adding to the political intrigue surrounding the state’s future leadership. As the election draws nearer, both parties are vying for support and hoping to secure the crucial Jat vote in Sikar.
