Tyre burst on Yamuna e-way kills top cop’s teenage nieces, injures 5

Agra: Two teenage nieces of Ghaziabad SSP were killed in a road accident on Yamuna expressway while five were injured when the speeding SUV turned turtle after its rear tyre burst and the vehicle collided with a divider.

The accident took place some 30 km from Mathura city on Monday afternoon in Mahavan area at milestone number 123 of the expressway. SSP Dharmendra Singh has rushed to his ancestral home in Jasrana in Etah district.

Speaking to TOI, deputy superintendent of police and circle officer of Mahavan S K Yadav said, “Two teenage nieces of Dharmendra Singh, Ghaziabad SSP, died on the spot and five were injured.” He identified the deceased girls as Anu, 18 and Trisha, 19.

“At around 12 noon, a speeding SUV collided with the divider after its tyre suddenly burst. Since the accident happened near a toll plaza, a quick rescue operation was conducted, saving most of the passengers’ lives,” he added.

According to police, the injured were identified as Yuvkirti Yadav, 11, Tanvi, 15, Sarita, 40, a gunner, Bipin Dubey and the driver, whose name is yet to be ascertained. They were taken to a private hospital close to the accident spot. All of them were unconscious.

Sarita is the wife of Girish Chand, who is in charge of Surajnagar police outpost in Noida.

The number of accidents on the Yamuna Expressway increased by about 20% last year as compared to 2014, an RTI reply had revealed. Fatalities, too, have gone up in the corresponding period, by 12%.
The RTI reply revealed that in 2015, 919 accidents were reported in which 143 people lost their lives and 403 were seriously injured. In comparison, in 2014, a total of 127 persons had died and 371 received major injuries in 771 accidents.
 Further, between January 1 and January 21 this year, as many as 44 accidents took place in which six lost their lives and 24 were “grievously injured”.
