University-Industry Research Round Table (UIRRT)-2018 Organized by School of Biotechnology, GBU

The School of Biotechnology, Gautam Buddha Universityorganized the University-Industry Research Round Table (UIRRT)-2018 under the visionary leadership of Prof. Bhagwati Prakash Sharma, Vice-Chancellor, GautamBuddha University on November 22, 2018. Shortly after joining his office, Prof. Sharma has kicked off a series of initiatives that are expected to improve the overall academics in the university.

Highlighting the significance of this Round Table, the Vice Chancellor emphasized that “This Round Table has brought together two important stakeholders, School of Biotechnology, GBU and the biotechnology industry on a common platform for constituting an Academia-Industry Consortium for long term collaborative research to advice on the course curriculum and also to help garner project and consultancy for contract research”. A non-credit compulsory course in Good Lab Practices (GLP) & Good Medical Practices (GMP) was also recommended to enhance the skill-set of graduation students.

During the event, both the academic- and industry-participants deliberated upon important issues in Biotechnology research and came up with a roadmap on how to synergize our research strengths and the needs and requirements of the industry. The departmental research capabilities were shared to industry personnel which would cater to the contract research needs of biotechnology and other industrial sectors of life sciences.

The discussion witnessed brain-storming session among distinguished dignitaries and eminent industry personnel including Dr. J.P. Prasad, Director, National Institute of Biologicals (NIB), Noida, Dr. Suchita Markaran, Biotech Consortium India Limited (BCIL), New Delhi, Mr. PuneetMehrotra Director, Reinste Nan Ventures Pvt. Ltd. Noidaand Mr. Kapil Ravi, Director, StellarGene Technologies, New Delhi to name a few. The event drew attention towards strategically important areas in Biotechnology research and issues like increasing the employability of GBU students. Emphasis was laid upon rigorous laboratory training, pre-placement orientation and problem-based assignments for students through live projects in coordination with industries to make graduate students industry ready. Some of the delegates offered to provide industrial training to the graduating biotechnology students. Dr. Markaran from BCIL apprised about the latest research and funding opportunities for the trainee students and also emphasized upon the need of inculcating awareness related to the IPRs and entrepreneurship among biotechnology students. This would help the university to improve the employability of Biotechnology students
