Noida : The Uttar Pradesh government is considering a reduction in the new penalties for breaking traffic rules, joining a growing band of states that find the fines listed in the amended Motor Vehicles Act too high.
“In the interest of the people of Uttar Pradesh, the government is reconsidering what and how it should be done,” state Transport Minister, Ashok Kataria said on the implementation of the new fines.
“We will soon take a decision and come out with the rates of penalty,” the minister said. The move follows similar decisions by other state governments, reluctant to accept the high fines specified under the central law.
However in Uttar Pradesh the rules have not been regulated and police is taking penalty as per the hike made by the state government on June. “Road safety is a very important aspect for us as every year 1.5 lakh people die in accidents. The new act is bound to ensure the safety of the people and not intend to generate revenue. We are now focusing more on traffic rule enforcement as we solved the problem of traffic congestion to a great extent, said SP Traffic A K Jha
Further, he said, “The awareness at present we are sensing is because of fear, it will take some time to aware drivers to change their mindset and driving patterns. While as per your question if someone is opposing the law, for them I would like to say, the law is for your safety so please follow it. ”
As per the data from January 2019 to August 2019 a total of 5 lakh 43 thousand people have been e-challaned and 6 crore, 38 Lakh rupees have been collected from them as penalty. And, in the month of August, only 67 thousand people have been e-challaned and 1.5 crores ruppes have been collected.
