New Delhi, July 17, 2023: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the new integrated terminal building of Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair on Tuesday via video conferencing. The project, aimed at enhancing connectivity infrastructure, has been a major focus of the government, according to a press release by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

Built at a cost of approximately ₹710 crore, the modern terminal building spans a total built-up area of around 40,800 sqm and is designed to handle approximately 50 lakh passengers annually. Additionally, an apron suitable for two Boeing-767-400 and two Airbus-321 types of aircraft has been constructed at Port Blair Airport, costing ₹80 crore, making it capable of parking ten aircraft at a time.

The architectural design of the airport terminal resembles a striking shell-shaped structure, artfully depicting the sea and islands of the region. Sustainability has been a key consideration in its construction, incorporating a double insulated roofing system to reduce heat gain, strategically placed skylights maximizing natural sunlight during the day to minimize artificial light usage, LED lighting, and low heat gain glazing.

To further its eco-friendly features, the terminal building includes a rainwater catchment system in an underground water tank, an on-site sewage treatment plant with 100% treated wastewater reuse for landscaping, and a 500 KW capacity solar power plant, ensuring minimal negative impact on the islands’ environment.

The new integrated terminal is hailed as the gateway to the pristine islands of Andaman and Nicobar, boosting air traffic and enhancing tourism in the region. Additionally, it is expected to create enhanced employment opportunities for the local community, further fueling the region’s economy.

The virtual inauguration by PM Modi marks a significant step towards the region’s progress and prosperity, promising a seamless travel experience and promoting sustainable infrastructure for the picturesque Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
