GARDEN OF EDEN
Jeremy Corbyn has been elected the Leader of the Labour Party .He is left-wing since the 80’s. He has been a back bencher M P since the day he was elected. He has been elected Leader of the Party and elected resoundingly. 59% of the votes cast were for him, for his policies on trade unions, reform , budget, his entire left wing anti- austerity program. Will one day a William Wordsworth, re-born, say ‘Bliss it was to be alive in that dawn To be young it was very heaven’.
For the uninitiated this is William Wordsworth the English poet Laureate of the 19th century. His reference is to the French Revolution. But there is another story, most certainly, concocted, but relevant. This is the story of Adam alone and lonely wandering in the Garden of Eden. He came to his Creator . His long face and sad mien worried Him. He asked him the reason for his pensive looks. The long and short of it was that Adam was utterly desolate in this wonderful place . This sense of loneliness was the cause of his woebegone look. So He took a rib out Adam and created Eve. And Adam and Eve were together. Adam was deliriously happy. He could not do enough to keep Eve happy. Both them were content. Some years went by. Irritants appeared in their relationship. Differences led to disagreements, silences and then fights. Then the parting of ways. God saw reason in Adam’s predicament and Adam got his rib back.
Eve was gone and all was well for Adam. He was the master of all that he surveyed. His world was his to enjoy and revel. But that was not to be. His loneliness, inadequacy was coming back. He resisted it as long as he could. He, finally, gave up. He went up to his God. He knew, He smiled and wordlessly He took Adam’s rib and gave him Eve. For Adam the stars were back and the dark clouds were banished. Eve had learnt her lesson. Adam had his space and he also had his Eve. The World , then only the Garden of Eden, was to the couple a place of joy. But that was not to be. Eve was a nagger or so Adam began to feel. He shrugged and thought he could make their companionship last. They had spats and tearfully made up. This was repeated. Adam became petulant. Then Eve did not show him the respect he assumed was his due being the bread winner. He was, finally, the male chauvinist.
His petulance got the better of him. He went to God and demanded that Eve be banished for ever once and for all. He said “God, I cannot live with her”. And God replied “ Nor can you live without her. Go back and live with her.” Today United Kingdom’s Labour Party cannot live without the Left, the same Left of Nye Bevan which it had banished . Tony Blair is a just a memory. Will tomorrow the United Kingdom, also, not be able to live without the Left ? And will the day after that the democratic world live with the Left?
