YEIDA Engages with Japan’s Super Formula to Bring World-Class Racing to India

Greater Noida (06 November 2025): India’s growing motorsport landscape may soon witness a thrilling addition to its racing calendar. Japan’s premier single-seater championship — the Super Formula Racing Series, widely regarded as the second-fastest motorsport competition after Formula 1 — is exploring a potential expansion into India.

A delegation from the Japan Race Promotion Corporation (JRP), the official organizer of the series, recently held discussions with the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) to assess the feasibility of hosting a Super Formula race at Buddh International Circuit (BIC) in Greater Noida. The circuit, which has previously hosted Formula 1 and MotoGP events, could soon welcome another world-class racing series to its track.

High-Level Talks Signal a Serious Interest

The visiting JRP delegation — comprising President Yoshihisa Ueno, Technical Director Takuya Hori, GM of Corporate Strategy Takashi Matsui, and International Marketing Manager Genki Miura — met with YEIDA CEO Rakesh Kumar Singh, ACEO Nagendra Pratap Singh, and OSD Shailendra Bhatia.

Following the meeting, the team inspected the Buddh International Circuit in YEIDA’s Sector 25, accompanied by Bhatia, to evaluate track conditions, logistics, and potential for hosting the Super Formula championship in the near future. According to officials, the discussion marks an important step toward positioning India as a new Asian destination on the Super Formula circuit map.

A Global Championship with Japanese Precision

Launched in 1973, Super Formula is Asia’s most prestigious open-wheel racing series and one of the fastest in the world — with cars capable of achieving speeds comparable to Formula 1 machines. Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2023, the series has become a platform where engineering excellence meets competitive talent, attracting drivers from Japan, Europe, and beyond.

In recent years, Super Formula has emerged as a proving ground for rising global talents, often serving as a stepping stone to Formula 1. The series has also been at the forefront of promoting inclusivity — with 17-year-old Juju Noda making history as Japan’s first female driver in the championship this year, signaling a progressive shift in motorsport’s gender dynamics.

Digital Evolution and Global Fan Engagement

Super Formula’s digital presence has rapidly expanded through its interactive SFGo platform, which delivers live driver telemetry, race analytics, and behind-the-scenes access to fans. The platform has already attracted more than 50,000 active users worldwide, complementing the championship’s growing reach across social media channels like X (formerly Twitter) and YouTube, where race content and highlights continue to attract millions of views each season.

Attendance at Japanese circuits has also surged in recent years, reflecting renewed fan enthusiasm for the series. Motorsport analysts view this rising popularity as a strong foundation for Super Formula’s expansion into new international markets.

India’s Motorsport Revival: A Perfect Match

The potential arrival of Super Formula aligns with India’s broader efforts to revive and globalize its motorsport ecosystem. The Buddh International Circuit, located along the Yamuna Expressway corridor, has witnessed a resurgence of international attention after hosting MotoGP Bharat in 2023.

Hosting Super Formula could further solidify India’s standing as a serious motorsport destination. Beyond the thrill of high-speed racing, such an event would drive economic benefits — from tourism and hospitality to infrastructure and employment — while also igniting enthusiasm among the country’s expanding community of racing fans and aspiring drivers.

Industry observers believe that bringing the Japanese championship to India could bridge Asia’s motorsport markets, promoting deeper collaboration between Japanese engineering expertise and India’s growing automotive ambitions.

An Era of Acceleration

If finalized, the Super Formula’s entry into India would not just mark the return of elite single-seater racing to Indian soil — it would symbolize a new era of high-performance sport, technology exchange, and global engagement.

With its high-speed reputation, data-driven innovation, and inclusive spirit, Super Formula’s possible debut at Buddh International Circuit could accelerate India’s transformation from a spectator market to a serious player in the world motorsport arena. As YEIDA official summarized after the meeting, The goal is not just to host a race — but to bring India closer to the global motorsport mainstream.
