Noida News (13/06/2026): Marking World Environment Day and World Ocean Day 2026, Amity University organized an International Conference on “Sustainable ITK-Based Climate Action for a Green and Blue Planet”, bringing together renowned scientists, academicians, environmentalists, policymakers, researchers, and scholars from India and across the globe. The conference served as a significant platform for discussions on climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, environmental sustainability, and the integration of Indigenous Traditional Knowledge (ITK) with modern scientific innovations.

The event was organized under the visionary guidance of Founder President Dr. Ashok K. Chauhan and Chancellor Dr. Atul Chauhan, reflecting the university’s commitment to advancing sustainable development and environmental stewardship.

The conference commenced with an introductory address by Prof. (Dr.) Tanu Jindal, who highlighted her extensive research contributions in environmental science, including pollution monitoring, groundwater assessment, pesticide risk analysis, Southern Ocean microbial studies, and environmental remediation technologies. She also presented details of several government-funded projects supported by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the Ministry of Earth Sciences, covering critical areas such as mobile tower radiation, Yamuna River pollution, groundwater contamination, and deep-sea microbial characterization.

Addressing the gathering, Shri Jitendra Kumar underscored the alarming impact of air pollution in Delhi and emphasized the urgent need for expanding forest cover, promoting large-scale tree plantation drives, developing smart forests, and encouraging sustainable agricultural practices to mitigate carbon emissions and improve environmental quality.

Speaking on the role of traditional wisdom in addressing climate challenges, Dr. Sanjeev Goyal stressed the importance of integrating Indigenous Traditional Knowledge with contemporary technologies to strengthen climate resilience and promote long-term environmental sustainability. Prof. Ajay Kumar Bhagi elaborated on the environmental challenges confronting the Delhi-NCR region, including rising pollution levels, recurring smog episodes, climate change impacts, and the need for sustainable development strategies.

A dedicated session on marine ecosystems featured insights from Dr. Suhas S. Shetye of CSIR-NIO, who discussed the far-reaching effects of climate change on oceans, including ocean acidification, deoxygenation, and disruptions to marine biodiversity. He also highlighted the significance of carbon sequestration techniques in maintaining healthy and sustainable marine environments.

International perspectives were provided by Prof. Chris Hauton from the University of Southampton, who spoke about climate-smart aquaculture, species diversification, and the integration of indigenous expertise with advanced aquaculture technologies to ensure sustainable food production systems. Prof. (Dr.) Abhishek Swami emphasized the value of traditional ecological wisdom in biodiversity conservation, sustainable agriculture, millet cultivation, and marine resource management, describing these as essential pillars for building a greener and more sustainable future.

Adding a global dimension to the discussions, Dr. Mucahid Mustafa Bayrak of National Taiwan Normal University examined the role of political ecology, climate adaptation strategies, resilience-building mechanisms, and Indigenous knowledge systems across Southeast Asia. Dr. M. Iqbal Raja Khan from Jamia Hamdard presented his research on climate adaptation in wheat crops through lanthanum and ABA-based physiological and metabolomic approaches aimed at improving agricultural resilience.

Representing the corporate sector, Shri Narendra Kumar Sisodia of NTPC Limited highlighted the importance of blending Indigenous Traditional Knowledge with modern environmental science to enhance climate resilience, conserve biodiversity, and support sustainable resource management. Dr. Piyush A. Kokate from CSIR-NEERI discussed the growing role of Indigenous Traditional Knowledge in environmental monitoring and showcased the application of drones, environmental intelligence systems, and other advanced technologies for effective ecological management.

Further enriching the discourse, Dr. Amritanshu Pattanaik from DRDO explored themes related to Traditional Ecological Knowledge, biodiversity conservation, Indigenous rights, and international ecological policy frameworks, emphasizing the need for inclusive and community-centered environmental governance.

The conference also featured inspiring addresses by Dr. Ajit K. Nagpal and Dr. W. Selvamurthy, who called for stronger interdisciplinary collaboration, innovative research initiatives, and deeper integration of traditional knowledge systems with modern science to address emerging environmental challenges.

A special highlight of the event was the active participation of young researchers and scholars from various universities, who presented innovative studies on marine Indigenous knowledge systems, artificial intelligence-based environmental monitoring, biodiversity governance, sustainable agriculture, fungi-based food systems, air pollution management, and seaweed-based climate-resilient solutions.

The conference concluded on a highly positive note with a strong consensus on the need for collective action to address climate change and environmental degradation. Participants reaffirmed the importance of combining Indigenous Traditional Knowledge with scientific innovation to build resilient ecosystems, promote sustainable development, and create a healthier, greener, and more sustainable planet for future generations.
