New Delhi, August 15, 2023: India’s Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud commemorated the 77th Independence Day at the Supreme Court of India by highlighting the country’s journey from colonial subjugation to a republic founded on democratic principles.

In his message to the nation, CJI Chandrachud extended warm Independence Day wishes and emphasized the significance of upholding constitutional values in daily life, stating, “I wish all my fellow Indians a happy Independence Day. The flag beckons us to allow the constitutional ideas and values in our lives to flourish.”

He emphasized that the national flag stands as a representation of shared heritage and continues to guide the nation towards its aspirations. Praising the foresight of India’s founding leaders, CJI Chandrachud acknowledged their role in shaping institutions that facilitated social, political, and economic transformation.

The Chief Justice, who also participated in the Independence Day festivities at the Red Fort, echoed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s praise for the Supreme Court’s recent decision to translate the operative portions of judgments into regional languages. PM Modi applauded the court’s move to prioritize teaching in native languages, making judgments more accessible to litigants.

Significantly, CJI Chandrachud recently unveiled plans to integrate artificial intelligence for translating Supreme Court judgments from English to regional languages. This initiative aims to enhance inclusivity and streamline legal proceedings.

During the celebration at the Supreme Court, advocate Adish Aggrawal applauded the court’s efforts in making legal proceedings more efficient and accessible. He conveyed, “My Lord, you have made the Supreme Court a paper-friendly institution. While most honorable judges have adapted to digital processes, some advocates still face challenges with laptops during court proceedings.” Aggrawal continued, “I take this opportunity to commend the harmonious cooperation of the bar with the executive and judiciary. This collaboration is instrumental in ensuring swift justice delivery in India. I express my gratitude for considering and implementing my suggestions.”

As India celebrated its 77th Independence Day, both the CJI and the Prime Minister underscored the importance of preserving constitutional ideals and embracing technological advancements to ensure equitable access to justice for all citizens.
