Greater Noida News (20/02/2026): The Department of English at Gautam Buddha University formally launched an annual academic lecture series dedicated to Nobel Laureates in Literature with a special lecture held on February 18. The inaugural lecture, titled “Satantango, Grieving Nations, and the Road to the Nobel,” marked the beginning of a long-term scholarly initiative aimed at promoting critical engagement with world literature.
The programme opened with an introductory address by Dr. Sumitra Huidrom, Head of the Department of English, who highlighted the academic objectives of the lecture and explained how the series is envisioned as a sustained platform for dialogue on Nobel Prize–winning literary works and ideas.
The welcome address was delivered by Professor Madhav Govind, Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. He underlined the significance of studying Nobel laureates to better understand literature’s ethical concerns, aesthetic innovations, and global responsibilities. He also stressed the relevance of such discussions in strengthening contemporary humanities education.
The keynote lecture was presented by Christel R. Davedawson, who offered an in-depth analysis of themes articulated in the December 2025 Nobel acceptance speech of Hungarian writer László Krasznahorkai. Focusing on hope, artistic resistance, and the relationship between human dignity and knowledge hierarchies, the speaker examined how these ideas resonate across literary forms. Drawing on the novel Satantango, contemporary graphic fiction, and representations of collective national grief, the lecture questioned whether such themes can be contained within traditional novelistic structures or require new conceptual and formal approaches.
The session concluded with an interactive question-and-answer segment, during which students actively engaged with the speaker, reflecting strong academic interest and participation.
The programme ended with a vote of thanks by Dr. Bipasha Som, Programme Coordinator, Department of English, who acknowledged the support of the university administration, the efforts of the organising team, and the enthusiastic involvement of students and faculty members. The lecture reaffirmed the Department of English’s commitment to sustained scholarly inquiry and to fostering critical perspectives on global literature through structured academic initiatives.
