BJP Delhi Pradesh President Dr. Harsh Vardhan has demanded that Lt. Governor that he should form a high powered committee under his supervision to find a solution to the problem of the public transport in Delhi. This committee should submit its report on the problems and solution of public transport in Delhi and NCR within three months. Government should also take action on it so that the untimely and tragic death on roads in Delhi may by prevented.

He said that the population of Delhi is 2.30 crores at present and Delhi is second largest mega city. Its population is only 10 lakhs less than the population of Mumbai. Public transport in Delhi includes Metro Rail, DTC Buses, Chartered Buses, Feeder Buses, RTVs, Auto, Battery Rikshaw, Paddle Rikshaw, Ring Rail, Local Rail, Buses from nearby states, etc. and every day lakhs of people use these services. Due to chaotic transport system in Delhi the average death rate is 6.7 persons per day. About 70 vehicles are stolen every day and 70 lakhs vehicles are registered in Delhi.

Dr. Harsh Vadhan told that due to large numbers of vehicles and encroachment, the footpath have disappeared in Delhi. This has led to accidents. Delhi needs a foolproof transport policy which has not been framed even after independence. Now the time has come to frame public and private transport policy so that traveling may become safe and comfortable. Maharana Pratap ISBT, Sarai Kale Khan ISBT and Anand Vihar ISBT are not sufficient for the large number of buses coming form outside states. There is no bus terminal for private buses. These buses are the cause of accident because these are run by corrupt transport mafia. There should be provision to control this service also.

In order to control air and noise pollution in Delhi it is necessary that the city gets rid of diesel and petrol run vehicles. The expert are of the view that within the next 10 years the population of Delhi will increase by 60 to 70 lakhs. The transport system will have to make provision for this also. Since there is scarcity of land in Delhi, people shall prefer NCR area. There is need to frame a policy which will help them to commute from one corner of NRC to another within an hour.
